It's always rough during a taper week though, especially with all of the mountains around Crested Butte starting to open up. With my legs feeling good from the reduced volume they were getting very restless towards the end of the week. Going into the race I felt ready to go. My legs felt good, and I was eager to see what they could do. After about 8,000' of climbing, and 22 miles, I quickly realized that I did not do enough power hiking leading up to the race. That's when I could no longer sustain Dakota's uphill pace and had to watch him pull away.
