Training Recap: June 16 - 22

Sunday:
  • (AM) Run: 14.83 Mi - 2,100' - 2:34 - Long(ish): Met up with Jake Jones and tagged along for 2.5 hours of his long run. Lower, Lupine, Cloud City, Long Lake, Snodgrass, then hitched a ride back down to town.
  • (PM) Mountain Bike: 7.16 Mi - 400' - 1:01 - Easy: Rode up to the Skyland Boulders to show Jess since she is a climber and has never seen them. Hiked/climbed around for a bit before riding back to town.
Monday:
  • (PM) Run: 7.68 Mi - 900' - 1:24 - Easy: Jess, the pups, & I met up with Lara and drove out to the Slate River Campground to run OBJ. The log bridge was out so Lara just ran back to town. Jess & I forded the river and ran up a ways. Even saw some kayakers run the falls. 
Tuesday:
  • (AM) Run: 4.16 Mi - 300' - 0:41 - Easy: Ben, Nate, Jess, 3 pups, & I ran out towards the Lower Loop. Nate & Ben turned off and went longer when Jess & I turned around. Its starting to feel weird running short, this tapering thing is rough. Legs are starting to feel good though! 
Wednesday:
  • (PM) Run: 8.19 Mi - 900' - 1:13 - Easy: Getting closer and closer to race day. Today was my last "normal" run before the race so I wanted to run the Lupine Trail one more time since the Lupine are in full bloom right now. Nate & his dog Lefty joined me.
Thursday:
  • (PM) Run: 4.10 Mi - 300' - 0:37 - Easy: Another woods walk loop with Ben & Nate. Tried out my new watch, the Garmin 910xt, looking forward to using it at San Juan this weekend without worrying about the battery dying. 
Friday:
  • (AM) Run: 4.31 Mi - 300' - 0:33 - Easy: Last run before the leaving for Lake City. Bumped into Nate, and he joined me for most of it.
Saturday:
  • (PM) Run: 49.22 Mi - 12,300' - 8:39 - RACE: Well, the race is over. Not exactly what I had hoped for but I learned a lot and know what I need to focus on in training now. Even with a sub par day, I was able to finish 3rd behind some awesome performances from Dakota (Course Record) and Jason who ran the 3rd fastest time ever on the course. More details and a race report coming soon.

Week Summary

A very easy week other than running a 50 mile race at the end. It's always rough during a taper week though, especially with all of the mountains around Crested Butte starting to open up. With my legs feeling good from the reduced volume they were getting very restless towards the end of the week. 

Going into the race I felt ready to go. My legs felt good, and I was eager to see what they could do. After about 8,000' of climbing, and 22 miles, I quickly realized that I did not do enough power hiking leading up to the race. That's when I could no longer sustain Dakota's uphill pace and had to watch him pull away. To get the full recap of the race, check out my Race Report which will be posted soon.
