Summary: This week marked the end of January, already. After looking back at my running log from previous years, I realized that it was the best January I have had in 10 years, logging 326.16 miles. Here are my January totals from the previous 9 years: (195 last year, just 13 in 2011, 57 in 2010, 218 in 2009, data NA for 2008, 154 in 2007, 246 in 2006, 137 in 2005, and 74 in January of 2004). At this time last year, I was also suffering from an odd calf injury which put me out for a few weeks. It was a result of running too long and too fast before I was ready. This year though, I feel much better off, and have already done three runs over 20 miles and have started incorporating supplemental runs a couple days each week.

On another note, on Saturday I participated in my first actual nordic ski race. The Alley Loop 42k Skate, held right here in Crested Butte. Going into the race I did not have any real expectation, and my only goal was to break 2:30. Leading up to the race, I only had 70 miles of skate skiing in all of January. So I knew I did not have the best skiing fitness. The race was 3 laps, and I felt alright the first two, then half way through the third lap I blew up. My arms were shot, and I had no power on the climbs. Looking back at my splits, I lost about 5-7 minutes over the last 5 miles. Overall though, I had fun and finished 25th with a 2:29:04, so no complaints.
