St Patricks Day - Feeling rested & recovered just 3 days after the race running up Bear Peak in Boulder.
If you've been following my Instagram feed at all this winter you already know that I haven't been doing much running. Not because of an injury or burnout, but rather I have gained a liking for skiing uphill. As did many other ultra runners this season (Rob Krar, Dakota Jones, Paul Hamilton, Brendan Trimboli, and even AK). Hint: if you don't have a pair of skimo skies, you are apparently missing out.. just saying. So its not wonder that last weekends (March 14) race didn't go quite as well as the past two years.

Two years ago I first ran the race and after some large volume training was able to win the race easily. Last year was a battle with Nick Clark since an early season injury set my training back. As for this year, I can honestly say that I got my A$$ kicked, but it was 'officially' just my 2nd week running this season. I know, you're thinking "but Kilian does it!". Thats right, except he races hard and often on skies, I did not. Plus he puts in a massive volume and total vert, again I did not. I nearly got my toes wet in the sport and enjoyed a relaxing winter doing relatively easy vert with just a few super long or intense efforts. Lets just say my mind & body are fresh and ready for the season. (Cough... out of shape).

On a positive note though, I recovered very quickly from the race and over this past week racked up nearly 80 miles & 15k vert, plus another 25 mile long run. So for 3 weeks into the running season the winter skiing has allowed me to jump right back into training with seamless efficiency. Its only a matter of time before the fitness returns, and that I am excited for. Especially with the killer season I have lined up!

Now before I run out of time, I need to pack. At this time tomorrow I will be in Colombia! (NOT S. Carolina)

Happy Trails!
